This was the third wettest season on record. These gray beds became class plots for grades k-2. Lettuce is already sprouting. The California native plant border is not yet planted. Water everywhere.

The orange temporary fencing was placed in preparation for installing the California native plant border. The border totaled about 80 linear feet with a depth of about 18". You can see the personalized name signs each child created for their plot.

Children had regular input as the garden evolved in design and scope. Shoveling tons of soil, compost and mulch was a huge task.

A view over the curly willow fence into a part of the student plots. A water outlet is in the foreground. You can also see 3 foot lengths of plastic pipe in the beds which helped the children organize the space in their plot. Before choosing seeds, children had to consider the eventual growth and size of the plant and where it should be planted considering its need for sun and space.

This is the longest stretch of the newly planted California native border. Several different species of seeds were sown along with some plants which were carefully selected for a children's setting. Plants that were non-toxic, no thorns, fragrant and flowers that would attract butterflies and beneficial insects. The curly willow is woven into the wire fence and shorter branches were also placed as a barrier against soccer balls. Eventually a solid branch fence was built where you see the brown fence posts on the ground.
