The Fairer Sex & Sensuality in Memorial Art : 88 Photos - This gallery shares beautiful females; nude or partially draped marble statues, a young teen blond in her little black dress, etc. Many of these images are female nudes found in cemeteries or mausoleums. I call such sculptures, memorial art. Many seem to express some degree of sensuality.
Throughout history, female nudes have been used in cemetery/memorial art. For a deeper examination, visit northstargallery.com/pages/Sensualilty.htm
Some of the images in this gallery were taken inside Forest Lawn Memorial Park's (Glendale,California, USA) Great Mausoleum.
As I discovered via a flier afterward, the general public is not allowed to enjoy these and many other works of art in the Great Mausoleum. Entry is granted only to those able to afford the high price of admission and their living family members. Why?
I turned the door handle of the Great Mausoleum and as the heavy door opened, I entered another world. The massive, cathedral-like structure houses not only the remains of thousands able to afford the lofty ticket price of admission, it houses beautiful works of art. Sculptures, stained glass windows and ceilings, elegant marble throughout and massive architecture. All off limits to the general public.
I didn't know at the time I turned that door knob, that Forest Lawn is consumed about keeping this structure and its contents strictly away from public view. I was simply a guy wandering around trying to take photos of good subjects who quickly realized the challenges posed in this low light setting.
My quest to find sculpture where the artist captured the human form/clothing began at the cemetery where my Mom and brother were buried side-by-side almost twenty years ago. One can attend a viewing of a stained glass window in the Great Mausoleum, The Last Supper, but, I've since returned (hoping to share with my family the splendor within) asking to enter the mausoleum. We were turned away. Again, why? One would think that Forest Lawn (and its founder Mr. Eaton and its longtime and current President and CEO, John Llewellyn, would want to share with the wider world, the beauty contained within given the frequent ugliness which hits us in daily life and in death...providing a form of comfort which is what could be said, is their business.
Forest Lawn loves attention but only on their terms. It thrives being known as the Disneyland of death services (and I mean that in the most respectful way ...after all, Walt Disney himself chose Forest Lawn) and hundreds of the famous and infamous call Forest Lawn home. It is obvious Forest Lawn takes its mission seriously and provides a needed service exhibiting the highest levels of excellence from its impeccable grounds to fine facilities and attentive staff. Forest Lawn's theatrical stagings for adults and school children, its public art, museum and grounds filled with celebrities and society's movers and shakers, convey a seemingly mixed message when it comes to excluding the public from the massive amounts of great art held within the Great Mausoleum.
Why the exclusion? Staffing its maze of halls isn't a concern; staff members are everywhere throughout the park. Security? Sure it's in a bad neighborhood. But, as I wandered the vast public grounds and then innocently in this remarkable place from which I was supposed to be excluded, I never saw graffiti...even in the restrooms. In the Great Mausoleum, I never saw another soul (sorry, no pun intended). And, that, to me, is sad. As I wandered, I was challenged as I mentioned above, by low light, by my impulse to rush my hand held shots since I had a vague gut feeling I was alone, but not; that someone was about to find me taking photos in a place where I was the forbidden invader...the only one...alive...appreciating fine art. Certainly, those entombed can not enjoy it.
Mr. Llewellyn (the current CEO), please open the doors to the Great Mausoleum for the public and the profound and positive impact it will have on us. I extend this offer: If you have looked at my photos and you like what you see, please contact me. I will offer my photographic services to Forest Lawn to use in ways upon which we can agree. The possibilities are limitless:
I can photographically catalog all of Forest Lawn's art at all its properties; the images could be published in many forms...books, DVD sets, and more; guided tours; respectful events built around the art and the images; museum exhibits. Again, the possibilities are limitless and can be accomplished in good taste equal to your mission statement while still being respectful of your residents and their families. Forest Lawn has the opportunity greatly expand its services to educate and benefit the larger public.
Thank you,
Jeff Lowe

A BIT OF BACKGROUND:
Many years ago after burying my mother and brother within days of the other, I was wandering their cemetery pondering and was intrigued by the statues I saw. I was taken by the artist's talent in being able to capture the female form (since that was all the cemetery had). The sculptor's manipulation of the viewer's perceptions...cloth and how it draped, creating muscle tone, emotions displayed in facial expressions, all created from stone, piqued my interest.
I began an informal quest to research and find as many sculptures and to photograph them which overwhelmingly depicted the female nude (or partially so) in the cemetery/memorial setting. As my cemetery visits grew, I began to realize that many of the sculptures seemingly evoked a sensuality in this form of memorial art. Here, then, are my photos...a project in evolution...the female form as portrayed in an often sensual manner in memorial art.

PERSONAL STUFF ABOUT ME YOU PROBABLY DON'T WANT TO KNOW:

I have a few dreams:

DREAM 1 - Two Premiere Exhibitions

Are you affiliated or have connections with a gallery and able to help fund and launch two key projects?

1. "Suicide Tide" is based on my exclusive and never before exhibited photographs documenting a man's suicide when he drove off a cliff into the Pacific Ocean. Compelling and powerful!

2. "Letters To My Mom" would be based on original, very personal, compelling letters sent to my mother when she was a child after she was sent out of Austria by her parents to escape certain death during World War II. The letters document Mother's last correspondence with her family who were exterminated without her ever seeing them again.

DREAM 2 - Mr. Lowe's Discovery World

Do you have a desire to help children discover photography and the arts? Are you...

>...able or do you know others who can provide financial or other resources to help school children discover photography and the arts?

>...able to provide long term, free... gallery/studio/retail/industrial/commercial/warehouse space in Los Angeles's South Bay or, in other art hubs such as downtown Los Angeles, the Westside, Culver City, Long Beach, San Pedro, NOHO, West Hollywood or a newly evolving area?

>...connected with someone who can help in a substantial way? Perhaps a private or public entity...a corporation, school district, city department, realtor, investor, venture capitalist???

>...able to, or know someone who is a whiz in funding and or in creating/building computer driven, programmable and other electronic ways of displaying digital photographs and integrating point of sale and on-site printing?

>...a visionary with guts, determination, and a get-it-done attitude and matching abilities?

As a photographer and California certificated teacher, I would like to open Jeff Lowe's Discovery World as an innovative artist's cooperative studio/gallery/outreach space to benefit children and artists.
Discovery World would:

a)...display my work and that of other photographers and artists in not only traditional ways, but also in 21st century computerized, interactive, multimedia displays...from laptop based, programmable image sets to be displayed on flat screens anywhere in the DW space. Touch screens would enable visitors to search and view all photo images (and other artists' works) in various sizes (including framing option views), and then to order/pay/ and receive their selections immediately.

b)...be open to schools as a field trip destination and to the entire community when not used as an educational venue for school children. DW would provide curriculum guides and dynamic, interactive, participatory outreach programs to encourage a love of photography and the arts.

c)...provide a rotating artist(s) in residence.

d)...create artist and student art shows, exhibitions and events which would engage guests especially youngsters and their families.

e)...provide a place for artists and school children to sell their creations.

A space that is open, airy, spacious, high ceilinged, with concrete floors, lots of natural light, and is 5,000 square feet, weather tight and has all utilities/AC/heating is preferred. Ideally, an undeveloped/unpaved space with water and electrical adjoining the DW would be used to eventually create a "Discovery Garden" for the school children which would be used in achieving the DW's overall mission.

I would love to discuss concepts/ideas with benefactors, supporters, technical folks and designers...doers and anyone able to provide free space, ongoing funding, or other assistance to bring the Jeff Lowe Discovery World concept to reality.

DREAM 3 - Road Trip America

I would like to take 2-3 week road-trips over a few years through every state in America. Traveling OFF interstate highways to take photos that reflect America's people and their spirit, stories, special personal and community events, meals...America's people from coast to coast.

CAN YOU HELP?
Please contact me if you or anyone or any entity you know (public television, galleries, visionaries, foundations, grant writers, documentarians, studios, etc.) would like to discuss underwriting or helping accomplish any of these projects.

MORE PERSONAL STUFF ABOUT ME THAT YOU PROBABLY DON'T WANT TO KNOW:

I'm just a regular guy trying to capture images I like. I prefer simple, genuine folks without pretense or big egos who aren't self-absorbed and who:
~ demonstrate a selfless desire to help others
~ possess a healthy dash of humility
~ display a genuine appreciation of their good fortune
~ apply a healthy dose of tolerance
~ share a glimpse of their intelligence
~ possess and demonstrate common sense
~ share a wittiness and refined sense of humor
~ use literacy well
~ enjoy an inquisitive and patient nature
~ exhibit an ability to laugh at oneself
~ aren't fearful of displays of affection in word and deed
~ appreciate reasonable fitness
~ and,
~ hold precious and protect nature's glorious bounty

I love nature but don't get to enjoy her often enough since I live in the dense urban jungle of Los Angeles. I love driving deserted back roads or wandering the path less traveled exploring what lies around the next bend. If you feel compelled to label, stick me with 'naturalist humanist all around good guy'.

I also love touring appreciative folks around...in California or anywhere else and preferably off the beaten path. Giving folks a bit of happiness brings me pleasure. I'd love to be able to make a living offering private, uniquely designed tours. So, if you want to retain my services, contact me. My current rate is $500 per day plus gas and expenses. But, sometimes I'll tour folks around for gas money. Okay, I've never accepted money from anyone for guiding them and do it for free. But, if you insist on helping me buy beans and toast and maintain my frugal existence, I might accept some bucks if you can afford it but only after us playfully dickering back and forth. I've been known to offer and then take total strangers (who usually always become fast friends) to see giant redwood trees or on a quick day tour of Yosemite, Los Angeles or elsewhere. If you want to take you or advise you on photography locations, again, contact me at jeff@jefflowephotography.com

THANKS!
Thanks for stopping by for a visit. Please visit often, you are always welcome.

Yosemite National Park : 50 Photos - The Yosemite National Park gallery features America's most beautiful national park. Be sure to look at the rare "fire fall" photos I captured in 2008 showing burning embers cascading down the 4,000 foot granite cliff reminiscent of the REAL fire fall from Glacier Point in years past. While on a brief vacation in Yosemite, May 2008, a fire started at the very top of the cliff above the Ahwahnee Hotel in a spot directly opposite Glacier Point. For those familiar with a bit of Yosemite history, until being stopped in 1968, a large campfire was started at Glacier Point about 4,000 feet above Curry Village. When the pile of embers had become massive enough, a conversation of yells took place between the hundreds gathered in Curry Village on the valley floor and those above at Glacier Point. Eventually the guests would yell, "Let the fire fall"! The massive flow of embers would then be pushed over the Glacier Point cliff creating an impressive display...a kind of waterfall of burning embers.

Jump to May 2008: The fire on the cliff created embers that fell off the cliff a few times recreating, if you will, the 'fire fall' of years past.

These photos (not of printable quality and so not available for purchase) trace a school garden (I created it for my students and school) through its first and only year...from its birth...to its death caused by an evil principal and pastor.

Most heartbreaking, they not only killed a beautiful, living creation, habitat and outdoor classroom, but they crushed the kids' dreams and exciting learning, pleasure and safe-place it provided for the precious children in my class, other classes and for their families.
